Robber's Roost

Robber's Roost. Walls have crumbled
While Death Valley is not known for its abundane of bandits and outlaws, one legend still remains. The Robber's Roost as is was known is a small rock overhang overlooking Butte Valley near Quail Spring with dry stacked rock walls protecting it from the elements. Lore goes on to say that robbers lived here and raided mines. Unfortunately, this is nothing more than an interesting anecdote. The history has been lost to time, but it was probably built to house the workers for a lead mine just up the hill from Robber's Roost.

Looking out into the Valley
The area is flat and isolated, very few travel the road up here. The holes in the rock are plugged with a few dry stone walls and the room inside is empty although the roof is stained with soot in one spot. The mine tunnel up the hill, while collapsed at the entrance, shows signs of being lived in for a time. I took out the macro lens and took some close pictures of copper ore.

Some faint writing on this rock just in front of the cave

Back wall has crumbled quite a bit

Not a bad view

Some monkey flower in front of the Roost

Old lead mine with stove

Shallow shaft

Copper ore

Purple glass. Purple because of magnesium in the glass.

Hey Andrew! Hope things are going well for you.

I haven't ever been to this spot, but I sure do recognize Striped Butte in one of your nice photos.
